GTZ & ICCN: Day 1

Following Sylvie Ouellet’s visit to the General Hospital, today we have started our training with ICCN (Institute Congolaise pour la Conservation de la Nature) together with GTZ, on pressing fuel briquettes. Many Conservateurs from different park stations have been invited to this session, and there was 100% acceptance to adopt this method.

In the classroom going through the theory

Boiling water for a live demonstartion

Everyone was totally amazed to see how fast these briquettes can burn (and hot) and they have showed their preference to cooking with this system because it can be started up in only 2 minutes.

Mixing the materials (with Isidore – from the Hospital – and Cecile Balole who came to help with the presentation)

Every Conservateur gave it a try with the press machine

With Radar, the new Director of Kahuzi Biega National Park

At lunch break

Shooting a video for GTZ, explaining what has been learnt so far

The whole group who has attended the fuel briquette training

I have no words to say how relieved I feel because this project is being taken over now by GTZ and ICCN here in Bukavu, they are very committed to getting it right, and have many plans on how to approach the ‘marketing’ of briquettes with the local communities.

This Thursday, Friday and Saturday I will be travelling to Chivanga, a Park Station 30 km away from Bukavu. We will be making our debut with the first press machine in Kahuzi Biega National Park. This is just the begininig, for it is one of many presses to be installed in the Park.
